Violets Soy Candle 6oz This candle is named in honor of Sappho (c. 630 – c. 570), a Greek poet known for her poems about lesbian love. Violets have been used as a language of queer love starting with Sappho’s poems in which she uses violets to talk about her lover. Sappho’s poetry was centered around the relationships and love between women. She was a Greek poet who lived on an island named Lesbos and because of her fame of being a woman who loved women, the term lesbian was coined after her and her place of residence. Violets as a symbol of queer love rose again in 1926, when Édouard Bourdet’s play, The Captive, showed a female character sending another woman a violet bouquet. When the play led to an uproar and calls for boycott and censorship, some women in Paris wore violets as a sign of support.
